US Virgin Islands
The US Virgin Islands give you the Caribbean experience without the international travel complications. No passport needed. No currency exchange. Your health insurance works here. And yet, when you step off the plane in St. Thomas or St. Croix, it feels completely, unmistakably Caribbean. The water is that impossible shade of turquoise. The hills are lush and green. And the pace of life downshifts the moment you arrive.
The USVI consists of three main islands: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Each has its own character. St. Thomas is the most developed, with duty free shopping in Charlotte Amalie, a busy cruise port, and a wide range of resorts. St. John is two thirds national park, with hiking trails, quiet beaches, and an eco friendly vibe. St. Croix is the largest and least touristy of the three, with a rich Danish colonial history and a growing food and rum scene.
Why We Love the USVI
For families with young kids, the USVI is one of the easiest Caribbean trips you can plan. The domestic flight logistics alone save hours of stress. For couples, a split trip between the energy of St. Thomas and the tranquility of St. John creates a perfect balance. And for travelers who want to explore a Caribbean island with real history and character, St. Croix delivers in ways that surprise people.
Where to Stay
On St. Thomas, The Ritz Carlton is the flagship luxury property, sitting on a beautiful stretch of beach on the east end of the island. Frenchman’s Reef is a newly renovated Marriott property with dramatic cliffside views. For something more intimate, Point Pleasant Resort offers condo style suites tucked into the hillside with incredible bay views.
On St. John, Caneel Bay was the legendary resort for decades and is currently being redeveloped. In the meantime, the Westin St. John offers a solid resort experience, and villa rentals are hugely popular here, many with private pools and sweeping views of the water.
St. Croix has fewer large resorts, but the Buccaneer is an iconic property that has been welcoming guests since 1947. It sits on 340 acres with three beaches, a golf course, and a spa.
Things to Do
Trunk Bay on St. John is regularly named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It has a marked underwater snorkeling trail that is perfect for beginners. Magens Bay on St. Thomas is another stunner, a long crescent of calm water surrounded by green hills.
Virgin Islands National Park covers most of St. John and offers miles of hiking trails through tropical forest, past sugar mill ruins, and down to secluded beaches. The Reef Bay Trail is the most popular, ending at ancient petroglyphs carved into rocks near the shoreline.
In St. Croix, the town of Christiansted is a beautifully preserved Danish colonial port town. Explore Fort Christiansvaern, stroll the boardwalk, and visit the Cruzan Rum Distillery for a tour and tasting. Buck Island Reef National Monument, accessible by boat from St. Croix, offers some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean.
