Thailand
Thailand is one of those places that delivers no matter what kind of trip you are looking for. Want to spend a week on a white sand beach with a cocktail in your hand? Thailand has that. Want to trek through jungles, visit ancient temples, and eat some of the best food you have ever tasted for a few dollars a plate? Thailand has that too. It is an incredibly versatile destination, and it offers more value per dollar than almost anywhere else on the planet.
The country sits in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. It stretches from the mountainous north around Chiang Mai down through the flat central plains of Bangkok and into the tropical islands and beaches of the south. Each region feels like a different country, and the best Thailand trips combine at least two of them.
Why Thailand Works for Almost Everyone
Thailand has been welcoming international visitors for decades, and it shows. The tourism infrastructure is excellent. Hotels range from $15 a night guesthouses to some of the most luxurious resorts in the world. Transportation between cities is easy and affordable. The food is legendary. And the Thai people are famously welcoming and hospitable.
For couples and honeymooners, the combination of luxury resorts, stunning beaches, and intimate cultural experiences is hard to beat. For families, the gentle pace, safe environment, and kid friendly beaches make it approachable. For solo travelers and adventurers, Thailand practically invented the backpacking trail and remains one of the best places in the world for independent travel.
Where to Go
Bangkok is the chaotic, exhilarating capital. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho with its massive reclining Buddha, and the Chatuchak Weekend Market are must sees. But Bangkok also has a world class dining scene, rooftop bars with skyline views, and a canal system that offers a fascinating glimpse into the old city.
Chiang Mai in the north is the cultural heart of Thailand. It is surrounded by mountains, dotted with hundreds of temples, and known for its night markets, cooking classes, and easy access to hill tribe villages and elephant sanctuaries. It is a more relaxed counterpoint to Bangkok and a favorite with long stay travelers.
In the south, the islands steal the show. Phuket is the largest and most developed, with a wide range of resorts and nightlife. Koh Samui has a more laid back feel with palm lined beaches and upscale boutique hotels. Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands offer some of the most dramatic limestone scenery in the world, with emerald green water and hidden lagoons.
Food and Drink
Thai food is reason enough to visit the country. Pad Thai from a street stall in Bangkok. Green curry from a hole in the wall in Chiang Mai. Tom Yum Goong, the spicy and sour shrimp soup, from anywhere. Mango sticky rice for dessert. The flavors are bold, the ingredients are fresh, and the prices are almost comically low by Western standards. A full meal at a street market costs two to four dollars. A sit down dinner at a good restaurant rarely exceeds fifteen.
Thai iced tea, fresh coconut water, and Singha or Chang beer are the go to drinks. For something stronger, Thai whiskey with soda and lime is the local favorite.
