Tahiti & French Polynesia

Tahiti & French Polynesia

French Polynesia is where the South Pacific becomes everything you imagined it could be. These 118 islands scattered across an area the size of Western Europe include some of the most visually stunning places on the planet. Bora Bora’s turquoise lagoon encircled by a barrier reef. Moorea’s jagged green peaks rising straight out of the ocean. The remote atolls of the Tuamotus where the water is so clear you can see 200 feet to the ocean floor.

This is the destination that popularized the overwater bungalow, and it remains the gold standard for that experience. For honeymooners, anniversary couples, and anyone who wants to step completely outside of everyday life and into something extraordinary, French Polynesia delivers in a way that very few places can match.

Where to Go

Bora Bora is the icon. Its lagoon, overlooked by the dramatic peak of Mount Otemanu, is arguably the most beautiful body of water in the world. The luxury resorts here are among the finest anywhere, and waking up in an overwater bungalow with a glass floor panel showing fish swimming beneath you is an experience that stays with you forever.

Moorea, just a 30 minute ferry ride from Tahiti, is Bora Bora’s more laid back sibling. The scenery is equally dramatic, with steep volcanic peaks, pineapple plantations, and calm bays. It is less expensive than Bora Bora and arguably more authentic, with more interaction with local Polynesian culture.

Tahiti itself is the largest island and the arrival point for international flights. Papeete, the capital, has a vibrant market, excellent restaurants, and a local energy that the resort islands lack. The Tuamotu Archipelago, especially Rangiroa and Fakarava, is world class diving territory with drift dives through channels filled with sharks, dolphins, and massive schools of fish.

Where to Stay

The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora sits on a private motu with views of Mount Otemanu and is considered one of the top resorts in the world. The Conrad Bora Bora Nui offers stunning hilltop and overwater villas. The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa features the world’s first over water spa and a house reef full of marine life.

On Moorea, the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa and the Sofitel Kia Ora are excellent options with overwater bungalows at lower price points than Bora Bora. On Tahiti, the InterContinental Tahiti is a comfortable base for your first and last nights.
