St. Kitts & Nevis

St. Kitts & Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis is the Caribbean that many people thought no longer existed: uncrowded beaches, genuine local culture, lush volcanic landscapes, and a pace of life that forces you to slow down whether you planned to or not. This two island nation in the Eastern Caribbean has not been overdeveloped or overrun with mega resorts, and that is precisely what makes it special.

St. Kitts is the larger of the two islands, dominated by the dormant volcano Mount Liamuiga and ringed by beaches that range from golden sand to volcanic black. The island has a rich colonial history visible in the massive Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once served as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies.” Nevis, its smaller sister, is even quieter and more exclusive, with plantation inn style hotels, a single main road that circles the island, and some of the best snorkeling in the region.

Where to Stay

Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour is the island’s flagship luxury property, sitting on a stunning stretch of beach at the southeastern tip of the island with views across to Nevis. It is a genuinely world class resort in a Caribbean setting that still feels undiscovered. The St. Kitts Marriott Resort is the island’s largest hotel, with a casino, golf course, and beach. For a more intimate experience, Belle Mont Farm on Kittitian Hill offers sustainable luxury with farm to table dining and panoramic views.

On Nevis, the Four Seasons Resort Nevis is the standout, with a Robert Trent Jones II golf course, a spectacular beach, and the kind of relaxed elegance that Nevis does better than almost anywhere. Montpelier Plantation and Beach is a small, historic property with a loyal following among travelers who value privacy and authenticity.

Things to Do

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a must visit. The massive 18th century fortress sits on a volcanic hillside with panoramic views of the surrounding islands. The St. Kitts Scenic Railway takes you on a narrow gauge train ride around the island, originally built to transport sugar cane, now offering views of the coastline, rainforest, and abandoned sugar plantations.

Hiking Mount Liamuiga is a half day adventure through rainforest to the crater rim of the dormant volcano. The views from the top are extraordinary. South Friars Bay and Cockleshell Beach are the best beaches on St. Kitts for swimming and relaxing. On Nevis, Pinney’s Beach is a long stretch of golden sand backed by palm trees with the peak of Nevis rising behind it.
