South Africa
South Africa is one of those destinations that packs an absurd amount of variety into a single trip. You can watch a lion take down a wildebeest at sunrise, taste world class wine surrounded by mountains at lunch, and have dinner at a Michelin quality restaurant overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. All in the same country, sometimes in the same week.
The country sits at the southern tip of the African continent and offers landscapes that range from the bushveld savanna of Kruger National Park to the dramatic coastal cliffs of the Garden Route to the vineyard covered valleys of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Cape Town, consistently ranked among the most beautiful cities in the world, is the jewel in the crown, with Table Mountain presiding over a city that blends natural beauty, history, culture, and an extraordinary food scene.
Where to Go
Cape Town is where most trips begin or end, and it deserves at least three full days. Table Mountain is the iconic landmark, and the cable car ride to the top offers 360 degree views of the city, coastline, and surrounding mountains. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is the main shopping and dining hub. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, is a powerful half day excursion.
The Cape Winelands, centered around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek about 45 minutes from Cape Town, produce some of the best wines in the Southern Hemisphere. Tasting rooms are set against mountain backdrops, and the food at estate restaurants is outstanding. Franschhoek in particular has emerged as one of the top culinary destinations on the African continent.
Kruger National Park and the surrounding Sabi Sands and Timbavati private reserves are the premier safari destination. Private game lodges offer twice daily guided game drives with expert trackers, gourmet meals, and accommodations that range from luxurious to ultra luxurious. The Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo, are all present and regularly spotted.
The Garden Route stretches along the southern coast from Mossel Bay to Storms River, passing through forests, lagoons, coastal towns, and dramatic scenery. Highlights include Tsitsikamma National Park with its suspension bridge over a river gorge, the town of Knysna on a beautiful lagoon, and Plettenberg Bay with its whale watching and beaches.
