Singapore
Singapore is a city that should not work but somehow works brilliantly. It is a tiny island nation at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula with no natural resources, yet it has become one of the wealthiest, safest, and most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The skyline is futuristic. The streets are immaculate. The food is legendary. And the mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western cultures creates a society that is uniquely its own.
What makes Singapore special for travelers is the contrast. You can eat a Michelin starred plate of chicken rice at a hawker stall for three dollars, then walk to a rooftop bar at Marina Bay Sands for a $30 cocktail with a view that spans the entire city skyline. The Gardens by the Bay look like something from a science fiction film, with massive steel Supertrees wrapped in living plants and a cloud forest conservatory that houses a 115 foot indoor waterfall. And yet around the corner, a Hindu temple, a Chinese clan house, and a Malay mosque sit side by side on the same street.
Where to Go
Marina Bay is the iconic center of modern Singapore. The three towers of Marina Bay Sands, connected by the famous SkyPark and infinity pool, dominate the skyline. Gardens by the Bay sits nearby with its Supertree Grove, Cloud Forest, and Flower Dome. At night, the Supertrees light up in a sound and light show that is free to attend.
Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam (the Malay and Arab quarter) each offer a completely different atmosphere, cuisine, and architecture within a few blocks of each other. The Singapore Zoo, widely considered one of the best in the world, offers an open concept design where animals live in naturalistic habitats. The Night Safari, a separate nocturnal zoo, is a unique experience that families love.
Sentosa Island, connected to the mainland by bridge and monorail, has Universal Studios Singapore, an aquarium, beaches, and resort hotels. It is the family entertainment hub of the city.
Where to Stay
Marina Bay Sands is the landmark hotel. The rooftop infinity pool with skyline views is one of the most photographed spots in Asia (hotel guests only). Raffles Singapore, the legendary colonial hotel, has been meticulously restored and remains one of the finest stays in the city. The Fullerton Bay Hotel occupies a stunning waterfront position overlooking Marina Bay. For families, the Shangri La Singapore has beautiful gardens and an excellent kids’ program.
