Seychelles
The Seychelles is one of those places that looks too beautiful to be real. An archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, roughly a thousand miles east of mainland Africa, it is home to beaches that consistently rank among the most beautiful in the world. What makes them unique is the granite: massive, smooth boulders sculpted by millions of years of weathering, scattered along shorelines of white sand with turquoise water lapping at their base. There is nothing else like it anywhere.
Beyond the beaches, the Seychelles is one of the most ecologically pristine places on the planet. The Vallee de Mai on Praslin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of only two places in the world where the coco de mer palm grows in the wild. Giant Aldabra tortoises roam freely on several islands. The coral reefs are healthy and teeming with marine life. It is nature at its most unspoiled and dramatic.
Where to Go
Mahe is the main island, home to the international airport and the small capital of Victoria, one of the smallest capital cities in the world. The island has over 65 beaches, with Beau Vallon on the northwest coast being the most popular. The Morne Seychellois National Park covers much of the island’s mountainous interior and offers hiking trails through tropical forest with panoramic ocean views.
Praslin is about a 15 minute flight or one hour ferry from Mahe. Anse Lazio on the north coast is routinely voted one of the top five beaches in the world. The Vallee de Mai, a prehistoric palm forest that feels like stepping back in time, is the island’s cultural highlight. Praslin is quieter than Mahe and feels more remote.
La Digue is the smallest of the three main islands and the most photogenic. Anse Source d’Argent, with its towering granite boulders, palm trees, and shallow turquoise water, is the most photographed beach in the world. The island has no traffic lights and most people get around by bicycle, which gives the whole place a peaceful, timeless quality.
Where to Stay
Four Seasons Resort Seychelles on Mahe is built into a hillside above Petite Anse beach, with private tree house style villas and infinity pools overlooking the bay. Raffles Seychelles on Praslin offers spacious hillside villas with plunge pools and butler service. Six Senses Zil Pasyon on the private island of Felicite is the ultimate in seclusion and luxury. For a more accessible option, Constance Lemuria on Praslin is an excellent five star property with a championship golf course.
