Scotland
Scotland is a country that gets under your skin. The landscapes are moody and dramatic, shifting from misty glens to rugged coastlines to heather covered moors in the space of a single drive. The history is layered and complex, visible in the medieval streets of Edinburgh, the ancient standing stones of Orkney, and the ruined castles that dot the Highlands like punctuation marks in a very old story. And the whisky, produced in hundreds of distilleries scattered across the country, is not just a drink but a craft, a tradition, and for many visitors, a reason to come in the first place.
Scotland occupies the northern third of Great Britain and includes over 800 islands, of which roughly 130 are inhabited. The lowlands in the south have Edinburgh and Glasgow, two very different cities with complementary strengths. The Highlands in the north are where the scenery becomes extraordinary, with mountains, lochs, and coastline that feel both ancient and timeless.
Where to Go
Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The Old Town, built along a volcanic ridge from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with medieval and Georgian architecture, hidden closes (alleyways), and excellent restaurants. Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano in the middle of the city, offers a challenging hike with panoramic views of the skyline and the Firth of Forth.
Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, is grittier and more modern than Edinburgh, with a world class music scene, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, the Riverside Museum, and a food and drink culture that has been rising steadily. The city’s Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture, much of it by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, gives it a distinctive character.
The Isle of Skye is the crown jewel of the Scottish Highlands. The Quiraing, the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Pools, and the dramatic coastline around Neist Point are among the most photographed landscapes in the UK. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and can be explored in two to three days.
The Scottish Highlands are best experienced as a road trip. The North Coast 500, a 516 mile driving loop starting in Inverness, takes you through some of the most remote and beautiful scenery in Europe. Expect single track roads, Highland cattle, ancient castles, and empty beaches that could pass for the Caribbean on a rare sunny day.
Where to Stay
The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh is the city’s landmark five star property, sitting at the east end of Princes Street with views of the castle. Prestonfield House offers baroque luxury in a 17th century estate within the city. In the Highlands, Gleneagles is Scotland’s most famous resort, with championship golf, a Michelin starred restaurant, and a spa. On Skye, the Kinloch Lodge is a romantic country house hotel run by the Macdonald clan. For something more rugged, the Torridon is a Highland lodge with mountain views and outdoor adventures.
Food and Drink
Scottish food has been undergoing a quiet transformation. Fresh seafood, including langoustines, smoked salmon, oysters, and hand dived scallops, is outstanding, especially on the west coast and islands. Haggis, the national dish of minced offal mixed with oatmeal and spices, is better than it sounds and widely available in both traditional and modern preparations. Aberdeen Angus beef and Highland venison are exceptional.
Scotch whisky is Scotland’s most famous export. Distillery tours are a highlight of any visit, and the regions produce distinctly different styles: light and floral from the Lowlands, rich and sherried from Speyside, smoky and maritime from Islay, and bold from the Highlands. A good whisky bar in Edinburgh will have hundreds of bottles and a bartender happy to guide you through them.
