Samoa

Samoa is the South Pacific the way it was before the rest of the world discovered it. These two volcanic islands in the heart of Polynesia have pristine beaches, lush tropical forests, dramatic waterfalls, and a living culture that is one of the oldest and most intact in the Pacific. There are no high rise resorts, no theme parks, and no crowds. What there is: turquoise water, warm and generous people, traditional village life that runs on the rhythms of family and community, and a natural swimming hole so beautiful it looks like it was designed by a filmmaker.

For travelers who have done Fiji, Tahiti, or Bora Bora and want something less polished and more authentic, Samoa is the answer. The tourism infrastructure is modest, the beaches are often empty, and the experience of staying in a beachside fale (traditional open sided hut) and eating home cooked Polynesian food with your host family is as real as South Pacific travel gets.

Where to Go

The To Sua Ocean Trench on the south coast of Upolu is Samoa’s most famous attraction: a massive natural swimming hole, roughly 98 feet deep, connected to the ocean by an underground lava tube. Surrounded by manicured tropical gardens, you descend a wooden ladder into the impossibly clear turquoise water. It is one of the most unique natural swimming experiences in the world.

Lalomanu Beach on the eastern tip of Upolu is consistently rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the South Pacific, with white sand, calm turquoise water, and a row of beachfront fales that offer the quintessential Samoan beach stay. Piula Cave Pool, a natural freshwater pool inside a lava cave beneath a historic church, is another must visit.

Savai’i, the larger and less developed of the two main islands, is where Samoan culture is strongest and the landscape is most dramatic. The Alofaaga Blowholes shoot ocean water hundreds of feet into the air through coastal lava rock. The Tafua Peninsula Rainforest Preserve has virgin lowland forest and flying fox colonies. Falealupo Canopy Walkway offers views from the tree tops of an ancient banyan forest.

A traditional Samoan village visit, arranged respectfully through local guides, provides insight into the fa’a Samoa way of life. Watching a traditional umu (earth oven) meal preparation, participating in an ava (kava) ceremony, and seeing a siva (dance) performance are cultural highlights that go far beyond typical tourist experiences.

Where to Stay

Taumeasina Island Resort on a private island connected by causeway to Apia is Samoa’s most upscale property. Seabreeze Resort on Upolu’s south coast offers boutique comfort near the To Sua Ocean Trench. Return to Paradise Resort is named after the 1953 film shot on its beach. For the most authentic experience, beachfront fales at Lalomanu and along Savai’i’s coast provide open air sleeping with ocean breezes and home cooked meals for as little as $30 per night.
