Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of the easiest Caribbean trips you can take, and one of the most rewarding. It is a US territory, which means no passport, no currency exchange, and your cell phone works the moment you land. But make no mistake: this is a place with its own identity, its own rhythm, and a culture so vibrant it hits you the second you step outside the airport.

Old San Juan alone is worth the flight. The cobblestone streets, the pastel colonial buildings, the sound of salsa music floating through open windows at night. It is a place that photographs beautifully and feels even better in person. But Puerto Rico is much more than one neighborhood. From the bioluminescent bays of Vieques to the limestone caves of Camuy to the surf towns on the west coast, this island packs an enormous amount of variety into a relatively small footprint.

Why We Recommend Puerto Rico

For families especially, Puerto Rico checks every box. There is no passport hassle, flights from the East Coast are short and affordable, and the mix of beach time, history, and outdoor adventure keeps everyone engaged. For couples, the romance of Old San Juan paired with a few nights on a quieter island like Culebra or Vieques creates a trip that feels exotic without the logistical headaches of international travel.

The food scene is another major draw. Puerto Rico has quietly become one of the best culinary destinations in the Caribbean. From roadside lechoneras serving slow roasted pork to upscale restaurants in Condado reinventing traditional Boricua dishes, you can eat incredibly well here at every price point. Mofongo, the signature dish made from mashed plantains with garlic and your choice of protein, is something you will crave long after you get home.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season runs from December through April, with warm temperatures in the low to mid 80s and very little rain. This is peak season and prices reflect it, but the weather is nearly perfect. The summer months bring higher humidity and afternoon rain showers, but they also bring lower prices and fewer crowds. Hurricane season runs from June through November, with September and October carrying the highest risk.

Getting There

Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in San Juan is the main hub. Direct flights are available from most major US cities. From Dallas, you can find nonstop or one stop options that get you there in under five hours. Because it is a domestic flight, the process is identical to flying anywhere else in the US.

Where to Stay

The Condado neighborhood in San Juan is where you will find the biggest concentration of beachfront resorts and hotels. La Concha Renaissance is a popular pick with a stunning lobby and pool scene right on the beach. The Fairmont El San Juan is a classic that has been recently renovated and sits between the Isla Verde beach and the city. For something more boutique, the Olive Boutique Hotel in Condado offers a quieter, design forward experience.

Outside San Juan, the W Retreat and Spa in Vieques offers a luxury escape on a quieter island. The Copamarina Beach Resort on the southern coast is a hidden gem surrounded by nature reserves. And for travelers who want a mix of beach and rainforest, several properties near El Yunque National Forest give you both.

Things to Do

Old San Juan is a must. Walk the blue cobblestone streets, explore the massive fortresses of El Morro and San Cristobal, and lose yourself in the color and energy of the old city. El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, and the hikes to its waterfalls are spectacular.

The bioluminescent bays are a once in a lifetime experience. Mosquito Bay in Vieques is considered the brightest bio bay in the world. You kayak through water that glows neon blue with every paddle stroke. It sounds unreal until you see it.

Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. The water is impossibly clear, the sand is white and fine, and there is almost no development around it. Getting there requires a short flight or ferry from the main island, but it is worth the effort.

Food and Drink

Start with mofongo. You will find it everywhere, and every cook makes it a little differently. Lechon asado, whole roasted pig cooked over open coals, is a weekend tradition on the island. The best comes from the lechoneras along Route 184 in the mountain town of Guavate. Alcapurrias, deep fried fritters stuffed with meat or crab, are the quintessential street snack.

Puerto Rico also has a serious craft cocktail scene, with rum at the center of everything. Casa Bacardi offers tours, but for a more authentic experience, visit a local bar and order a Pina Colada, which was invented right here in San Juan.
