Mauritius

Mauritius is the tropical island vacation done at the highest level. This small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, about 1,200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa, is surrounded by coral reefs that create calm, turquoise lagoons along almost the entire coastline. The resorts here are genuinely world class, the food reflects a fascinating blend of Indian, French, Chinese, and African influences, and the interior of the island has volcanic peaks, waterfalls, and botanical gardens that give you a reason to leave the beach.

Mark Twain once wrote that Mauritius was made first, and that heaven was copied after it. That is a bold claim, but after spending a few days here watching the sunrise over a lagoon so calm it looks like glass, you start to understand what he meant.

Where to Go

The east coast around Belle Mare and Trou d’Eau Douce has some of the longest and most beautiful beaches on the island, with white sand and warm, shallow lagoons. Ile aux Cerfs, a short boat ride offshore, is a picture perfect island with excellent snorkeling and a Bernhard Langer designed golf course.

The southwest coast is more dramatic, with Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rising steeply from a peninsula surrounded by turquoise water. The area is also the kite surfing capital of Mauritius, with consistent trade winds from May through November.

The interior has its own appeal. The Black River Gorges National Park offers hiking through native forest with views of waterfalls and the island’s endemic bird species. The seven colored earth at Chamarel is a geological curiosity where exposed volcanic soil creates bands of red, brown, violet, green, blue, and yellow. The Chamarel Waterfall nearby is the tallest on the island.

Port Louis, the capital, has a lively central market selling spices, textiles, and street food. The Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tells the story of the indentured laborers who came to Mauritius from India in the 19th century.

Where to Stay

One and Only Le Saint Geran on the east coast is the island’s most legendary resort, recently renovated to the highest standards. The St. Regis Mauritius on Le Morne Peninsula combines beachfront luxury with dramatic mountain views. Shangri La Le Touessrok on the east coast is another standout with a private island, two beaches, and an Ilot Mangenie golf course. For families, the LUX Grand Gaube on the north coast and Sugar Beach in Flic en Flac offer excellent kids’ programs and all inclusive options.
