Kenya

Kenya is where the word “safari” was born. The Swahili word means “journey,” and a journey through Kenya’s wildlife reserves is one of the most profound travel experiences available anywhere. The Masai Mara, the most famous game reserve in Africa, delivers the full theater of the natural world: lion prides stalking through golden grass, cheetahs accelerating across the plains, elephants silhouetted against sunrise, and the thundering spectacle of the Great Migration’s river crossings.

But Kenya is more than safari. Mount Kenya, the country’s highest peak, offers serious mountaineering and trekking. Amboseli National Park provides the iconic image of elephants walking in front of Kilimanjaro’s snow capped summit. The Kenyan coast around Diani Beach and the Lamu Archipelago has white sand, warm Indian Ocean water, and a Swahili culture that blends African, Arab, and Portuguese influences.

Where to Go

The Masai Mara National Reserve is the undisputed highlight. At roughly 580 square miles, it is part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem and home to an extraordinary concentration of predators and prey. Game drives reveal lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo in quantities that never stop feeling miraculous. Hot air balloon rides over the Mara at dawn offer a perspective that is worth every dollar.

Amboseli National Park in the south provides some of the most iconic views in Africa. The park sits at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, and the sight of large elephant herds crossing the dry lake bed with the snow capped peak rising behind them is one of the great images of the continent.

Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley is famous for its flamingos, which at times turn the lake pink. It is also one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhinos. Lake Naivasha nearby offers boat rides among hippos and birdlife.

The Laikipia Plateau in central Kenya has become one of the most exciting conservation areas in Africa, with private conservancies that offer exclusive wildlife experiences, often including walking safaris, night drives, and encounters with endangered species like wild dogs and Grevy’s zebras.

Where to Stay

Angama Mara, perched on the rim of the Great Rift Valley overlooking the Masai Mara, is one of the most spectacularly located lodges in Africa. andBeyond Bateleur Camp in the Mara offers classic safari luxury. Tortilis Camp in Amboseli has views of Kilimanjaro from every tent. On the Laikipia Plateau, Segera Retreat and Ol Pejeta Bush Camp combine conservation with luxury.
