Iceland

Iceland is not like anywhere else. It is a volcanic island in the middle of the North Atlantic where glaciers and geysers exist side by side. Where waterfalls plunge off cliffs into black sand beaches. Where the Northern Lights dance across the sky in winter and the midnight sun refuses to set in summer. It is raw, dramatic, and hauntingly beautiful.

The country is small, with a population of roughly 380,000, most of whom live in the capital, Reykjavik. Outside the city, the landscape is vast, empty, and otherworldly. Driving the Ring Road, the highway that encircles the entire island, is one of the great road trips in the world. Every turn reveals something different: a steaming geothermal field, a glacier tongue reaching toward the road, a fjord cutting deep into the coastline, or a herd of Icelandic horses standing in a field of wildflowers.

What to See and Do

The Golden Circle is the essential introduction to Iceland. It covers three major sites within an easy drive of Reykjavik: Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly separate; the Geysir geothermal area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every five to ten minutes; and Gullfoss, a powerful waterfall that cascades into a narrow canyon.

The South Coast is equally spectacular. Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall you can walk behind. Skogafoss is a massive curtain of water that creates rainbows in the mist. Reynisfjara is a black sand beach with towering basalt columns and crashing waves, often cited as one of the most dramatic beaches in the world. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, further east, is filled with floating blue icebergs that calve off the Vatnajokull glacier.

The Blue Lagoon near Keflavik Airport is Iceland’s most famous geothermal spa, with milky blue water heated by underground volcanic activity. Sky Lagoon, closer to Reykjavik, is a newer alternative with an infinity edge pool overlooking the ocean. For a more natural experience, the Myvatn Nature Baths in northern Iceland offer similar geothermal bathing with far fewer tourists.

In winter, the Northern Lights are the headline attraction. Tours depart from Reykjavik and other locations across the country, heading into the dark countryside in search of clear skies and solar activity. When they appear, the experience is genuinely life changing.

Where to Stay

In Reykjavik, the Reykjavik Edition by Marriott and the Canopy by Hilton are two of the best hotels in the city, both within walking distance of the main attractions. For luxury outside the city, the Retreat at Blue Lagoon offers suites with private lagoon access and a world class spa. Ion Adventure Hotel, about 30 minutes from Reykjavik, sits on a lava field with views of Thingvellir and offers a design forward, nature focused experience.
