Grenada

Grenada is the Caribbean the way it used to be. This small, lush island at the southern end of the Windward Islands has not been overdeveloped, over branded, or stripped of its character. The beaches are beautiful, the interior is a green tangle of rainforest and spice plantations, and the people are genuinely warm in a way that feels personal rather than performative.

Known as the Spice Island, Grenada produces nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and cocoa in quantities that make the whole island smell incredible. It is a place where you can hike through a rainforest to a waterfall, tour a working cocoa estate, snorkel the world’s first underwater sculpture park, and sit down to one of the best meals in the Caribbean, all in the same day.

Why Grenada Is Special

Grenada is for travelers who want authenticity over production value. The resorts here are excellent, but they are not walled off from the rest of the island. You are encouraged to explore, to eat at local restaurants, to drive the winding mountain roads through nutmeg forests, and to talk to the farmers and fishermen who make this island what it is.

Grand Anse Beach on the southwest coast is consistently ranked among the top beaches in the Caribbean. It is a two mile stretch of soft sand with calm, clear water and a backdrop of green hills. Unlike some famous Caribbean beaches, it never feels overcrowded.

Where to Stay

Sandals Grenada is the island’s premier all inclusive resort, sitting on Pink Gin Beach with over water bungalows and a full suite of Sandals amenities. Spice Island Beach Resort on Grand Anse is a locally owned luxury property that has been a favorite of discerning travelers for decades. Silversands Grenada is a newer addition, offering a contemporary design aesthetic with the longest pool in the Caribbean.

For a more intimate experience, Mount Cinnamon on Grand Anse Beach offers villa and suite accommodations with a boutique feel. Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel is another small, high end option known for its personal service.

Things to Do

The Underwater Sculpture Park in Moliniere Bay is one of Grenada’s most unique attractions. Created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, the collection of cement sculptures sits on the ocean floor and has become a thriving artificial reef. You can snorkel or dive to see them.

Annandale Falls is an easy hike to a beautiful waterfall where locals and visitors swim in the pool at its base. Grand Etang National Park in the center of the island offers crater lake views, monkey sightings, and hiking trails through lush rainforest.

Tour a spice estate to see how nutmeg, cocoa, cinnamon, and vanilla are grown and processed. The Belmont Estate is one of the best, combining a working plantation with a farm to table restaurant and a heritage museum. The Grenada Chocolate Company produces some of the finest organic chocolate in the world using beans grown and processed entirely on the island.
