French Alps
The French Alps are where mountain sports were born and where they continue to set the global standard. Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe at 15,774 feet, presides over a landscape of glaciers, granite spires, and alpine meadows that has drawn adventurers, skiers, and romantics for centuries. The Three Valleys, with over 370 miles of connected pistes, form the largest linked ski area in the world. And Chamonix, the town at the base of Mont Blanc, is the undisputed capital of alpinism, with a history, an energy, and a setting that no other mountain town can match.
But the French Alps are not just a winter destination. In summer, the same mountains that host world cup ski racing become a paradise for hikers, trail runners, climbers, and mountain bikers. The Tour du Mont Blanc, a multi day trek circling the massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland, is one of the great long distance walks in the world. And the villages, with their stone chalets, Michelin starred restaurants, and sun drenched terraces overlooking snow capped peaks, are beautiful in every season.
Where to Go
Chamonix is the most famous alpine town in the world. The Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to 12,602 feet in 20 minutes, where a glass viewing platform called the Step into the Void lets you stand over a 3,280 foot drop. The Vallee Blanche, a legendary off piste descent through glacier terrain from the Aiguille du Midi back to Chamonix, is a bucket list experience for advanced skiers. In summer, the hiking trails, including the Grand Balcon Nord and the Lac Blanc trail, offer views of Mont Blanc that are simply staggering.
The Three Valleys (Courchevel, Meribel, and Val Thorens) offer the most extensive skiing in the world. Courchevel is the luxury resort, with five star hotels, designer shops, and an airstrip that serves private jets. Meribel is the most balanced, with excellent skiing for all levels and a family friendly atmosphere. Val Thorens, the highest resort in Europe, has the most snow reliable conditions and a lively apres ski scene.
Megeve is the old money alternative to Courchevel, a charming medieval village with horse drawn carriage rides, a pedestrianized center, and a more understated elegance. The skiing is intermediate friendly, and the restaurants, including several Michelin starred options, are excellent. Annecy, about an hour from Geneva, is a lakeside town that serves as a summer base for swimming, cycling, and paragliding over the crystal clear Lac d’Annecy, often called the cleanest lake in Europe.
Where to Stay
Hotel Mont Blanc in Chamonix is a five star property with spa facilities and views of the massif. Les Airelles in Courchevel is one of the most exclusive ski hotels in the world, with Michelin dining and butler service. Alpaga in Megeve offers contemporary alpine luxury with a private feel. Chalet Zermatt Peak and other luxury chalets throughout the region offer private chef, hot tub, and ski in/ski out experiences for families and groups.
