Europe is not a destination — it’s a continent of destinations, each with its own character, cuisine, history, and reason to exist on your itinerary. And the way most travelers experience Europe for the first time — the rapid-fire, ten-countries-in-fourteen-days tour — is, with all due respect, the wrong way to do it. You come home having technically seen Paris, Rome, Prague, and Amsterdam, but what you actually remember is airports and train stations and the inside of a tour bus.We plan European trips differently. We help you decide which country — or which two — is actually right for the time you have and what you want to experience. We sort out the logistics: whether you fly into one city and out of another, whether rail passes make sense for your itinerary, where your hotel needs to be located so that you’re walking to things rather than commuting to them. These decisions seem small in advance and are enormous in practice.
Europe, Country by Country
Italy
Italy might be the most repeat-visited country in Europe, and it earns every return. Rome’s Colosseum and Forum still land with genuine awe even for well-traveled visitors. Florence’s concentration of Renaissance art is staggering — the Uffizi alone could occupy multiple days. The Amalfi Coast, winding along vertiginous cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Venice is unlike any other city on earth. And the food — from a plate of cacio e pepe in a Roman trattoria to a Florentine bistecca to fresh-caught branzino in a Cinque Terre village — is justification for the trip all by itself.
France
Paris is one of the world’s great cities, and it rewards time — not a 36-hour flyby, but three or four days of actually sitting in cafés, walking neighborhoods rather than checking off museums, and letting the city reveal itself. Beyond Paris: Provence’s lavender fields and hilltop villages, the Loire Valley châteaux, the wines of Bordeaux, the Basque coast. France is best experienced slowly.
Greece
The Greek islands are a perennial favorite among our clients, and the variety is remarkable. Santorini’s famous caldera views and blue-domed churches at sunset are legitimately as beautiful as every photo promises. Mykonos brings energy, nightlife, and beautiful beaches. But it’s the less-visited islands — Crete, Naxos, Milos, Hydra — where Greece reveals a quieter, more authentic side that serious travelers tend to love even more. Athens, often used purely as a transit point, is worth two or three days on its own for the Acropolis, the food scene, and the chaotic, vibrant city life.
Portugal
Portugal has become one of our most-recommended European destinations, particularly for clients who want exceptional experiences without Western Europe’s premium price tag. Lisbon is a city of hills, trams, azulejo tiles, and world-class seafood. The Douro Valley’s terraced port wine vineyards are extraordinary, especially from the water on a river cruise. And the Algarve’s dramatic southern coastline — sea caves, golden cliffs, hidden beaches — rivals anything in the Mediterranean.
Spain
Barcelona alone justifies a trip to Spain: Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter’s medieval streets, some of the best tapas culture in Europe. But Spain beyond Barcelona is equally rewarding — San Sebastián’s extraordinary pintxos scene, Madrid’s world-class art museums and late-night energy, Seville’s flamenco and Moorish architecture, the white villages of Andalusia. Spain is one of Europe’s most diverse countries in terms of regional culture and food.
Croatia
Croatia has had a remarkable rise in international tourism over the past decade, and for good reason. Dubrovnik’s old town, encircled by medieval stone walls overlooking the Adriatic, is one of the most dramatic cities in the world. Hvar’s lavender fields and crystal-clear bays attract a stylish crowd. Plitvice Lakes National Park, with its interconnected turquoise lakes and waterfalls, is simply breathtaking. Croatia also offers genuinely good value by Western European standards.
