From sprawling mega-complexes like the Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana (4,000 rooms, more dining options than some towns have restaurants, a casino, a waterpark, and a stadium concert venue) to elegant, intimate adults-only properties like Excellence Punta Cana, the range is extraordinary. La Romana & Bayahibe

About an hour and a half west of Punta Cana’s airport, this stretch of coast has a different feel — quieter, more upscale, and home to the legendary Casa de Campo resort. Bayahibe’s beaches are gorgeous, and the snorkeling and diving around Isla Saona is some of the best in the country. Worth the slightly longer transfer for the right traveler.

Samaná Peninsula

The Samaná Peninsula is the Dominican Republic at its most dramatically beautiful — steep jungle-covered hills dropping into impossibly blue bays, waterfall hikes, and from January through March, one of the Caribbean’s best whale-watching experiences as thousands of humpback whales congregate in Samaná Bay to breed. Getting there requires a longer transfer or a domestic flight, but for travelers who want something genuinely off the beaten path, it’s extraordinary.
