Copenhagen & Denmark

Copenhagen & Denmark

Copenhagen is a city that makes everything look effortless. The design is impeccable, from the furniture in the cafes to the architecture of the harbor buildings to the way Danes dress on a Tuesday morning. The food scene, led by the New Nordic movement, has made Copenhagen one of the most important culinary cities in the world. And the concept of hygge, that uniquely Danish feeling of coziness and contentment, permeates the entire city in a way that makes you want to slow down and enjoy every moment.

The city sits on the coast of Zealand, the largest island in Denmark, with a harbor that doubles as a swimming hole in summer and a canal system lined with colorful 17th century townhouses. It is flat, bikeable, and remarkably easy to navigate. Within a few hours, you can visit a 400 year old amusement park, eat at a restaurant that reinvented European cuisine, and cycle past the royal palace before finishing with a craft beer in a converted warehouse district.

Where to Go

Nyhavn is the postcard: a narrow canal lined with brightly painted 17th and 18th century townhouses, now filled with restaurants, bars, and jazz clubs. Hans Christian Andersen lived here at three different addresses. It is touristy, but the visual charm is undeniable, especially in the golden light of a Scandinavian summer evening.

Tivoli Gardens, opened in 1843, is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and a Copenhagen institution. It is equal parts garden, amusement park, concert venue, and dining destination. The park inspired Walt Disney when he visited in 1951, and its blend of nostalgia, fantasy, and Danish design remains magical.

The National Museum of Denmark provides the best overview of Scandinavian history, from Vikings to modern welfare state. The Designmuseum Danmark showcases the Danish design tradition that gave the world Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, and a philosophy that function and beauty are the same thing.

Christiania, the self proclaimed autonomous neighborhood established by squatters in 1971 on a former military base, remains one of the most unusual urban experiments in Europe. Its car free streets, handbuilt houses, and alternative community atmosphere are fascinating to walk through.

The food halls at Torvehallerne and the street food market at Reffen are excellent for casual, diverse eating. Torvehallerne has gourmet stalls selling smorrebrod, fresh oysters, and pastries. Reffen, in a converted shipping container complex on the waterfront, has dozens of international food stalls and harbor views.

Where to Stay

Hotel d’Angleterre on Kongens Nytorv is Copenhagen’s grand dame, a five star property operating since 1755. Noma owner Rene Redzepi’s 108 hotel (above his second restaurant) offers design forward rooms and a food pedigree. The Sanders is a boutique theater hotel in the city center with an intimate, residential feel. For something more affordable, the Generator Copenhagen and Brochner Hotels offer Scandinavian design at mid range prices.
