Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman has one of those beaches that stops you in your tracks. Seven Mile Beach is a long, uninterrupted stretch of white sand along the island’s west coast, backed by luxury resorts and lined with water so clear you can see your toes in four feet of it. It is the kind of beach that made the Caribbean famous, and it consistently ranks among the best in the world.

But the Cayman Islands are more than just a pretty beach. Grand Cayman has a sophisticated restaurant scene, excellent diving and snorkeling, and a level of polish and safety that makes it one of the most comfortable Caribbean destinations for American travelers. The sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman offer a quieter, more rugged experience for divers and nature lovers.

Why Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands sit just south of Cuba and west of Jamaica, roughly a three hour direct flight from Miami or Houston. The infrastructure is excellent, English is the official language, and the island feels safe and well maintained. It is one of the wealthier Caribbean destinations, and that shows in the quality of the hotels, the restaurants, and the overall visitor experience.

For divers, Grand Cayman is legendary. The wall diving along the North Wall and the famous Stingray City sandbar, where you wade into waist deep water surrounded by dozens of friendly southern stingrays, are experiences that draw visitors back year after year.

Where to Stay

The Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman is the island’s premier luxury property, sitting right on Seven Mile Beach with multiple restaurants, a Greg Norman designed golf course, and a world class spa. The Kimpton Seafire Resort and Spa is a more contemporary option on the same stretch of beach, with a rooftop bar and a strong design aesthetic. For families, the Westin Grand Cayman and the Marriott Grand Cayman offer solid all around experiences with kids’ programs and beach access.

For travelers who want something quieter, the East End of Grand Cayman has smaller properties like the Wyndham Reef Resort and vacation rentals that feel more secluded. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are for travelers who want to disconnect, with small dive resorts and very little development.

Things to Do

Stingray City is the must do experience. You take a short boat ride to a shallow sandbar where dozens of stingrays congregate, and you can hold, feed, and swim with them in crystal clear, waist deep water. It is safe, memorable, and unlike anything else in the Caribbean.

The diving and snorkeling are exceptional. The Kittiwake, a decommissioned submarine rescue vessel deliberately sunk in 2011, is one of the best wreck dives in the region. Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto, accessible right from the shore near George Town, offer dramatic underwater swim throughs and abundant marine life.

George Town itself is a popular cruise port with duty free shopping, the Cayman Islands National Museum, and easy access to waterfront restaurants. The Cayman Turtle Centre lets you see and interact with green sea turtles at every stage of life.
