Cabo San Lucas
Los Cabos is where the Baja California peninsula ends and the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. The landscape is unlike anything else in Mexico: stark desert dotted with giant cardon cacti gives way to dramatic cliffs that drop into deep blue water. The famous Arch at Land’s End, a natural rock formation at the southern tip of the peninsula, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Mexico.
There are two distinct towns here. Cabo San Lucas is the energetic one, with a lively marina, a vibrant bar and restaurant scene, and a nightlife that attracts groups and couples looking for a good time. San Jose del Cabo, about 20 miles east, is the quieter, more cultured side, with an art district, farm to table restaurants, and a colonial town center that feels worlds away from the party scene. Connecting the two is the Hotel Corridor, a stretch of coastline lined with some of the best luxury resorts in Mexico.
Why We Recommend Cabo
Cabo is close. From Dallas, you are looking at a flight of about two and a half hours with nonstop options on multiple airlines. That proximity makes it perfect for long weekends, which is something most Caribbean destinations cannot offer. It is also one of the best golf destinations in the Western Hemisphere, with courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Greg Norman carved into the desert and cliffs along the coast.
The deep sea fishing is world class. The waters off Cabo are known as “Marlin Capital of the World,” and charter boats head out daily in search of striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, and wahoo. Whale watching from December through April brings humpback and gray whales close to shore, and snorkeling at Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay rivals anything in the Caribbean.
Where to Stay
The Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is carved into the cliffs above the Pacific and is one of the most dramatic resort settings in Mexico. Every room has a private plunge pool and an ocean view. Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection, sits on the corridor with a stunning infinity pool and a spa built into a cliff. The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, offers a more contemporary, design forward experience with a rooftop pool and Manta, a restaurant by Enrique Olvera.
For all inclusive options, the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos and Breathless Cabo San Lucas are popular picks. Grand Velas Los Cabos is a luxury all inclusive that competes with the best standalone resorts in the area.
