Brazil

Brazil is a country that operates at a frequency most places cannot match. The energy of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, with two million people in the streets dancing to samba, is the largest party on Earth. The Amazon rainforest, covering an area larger than Western Europe, is the most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet. The coastline stretches for over 4,500 miles, with beaches that range from urban icons like Copacabana to remote paradises like Fernando de Noronha. And the people, the Brazilians themselves, bring a warmth and joy to daily life that makes everything feel a little more alive.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, and its scale means you cannot see everything in one trip. But even a focused visit to two or three regions delivers experiences that are genuinely unlike anything else.

Where to Go

Rio de Janeiro is the gateway for most visitors and one of the most dramatically beautiful cities on Earth. The Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue atop Corcovado mountain overlooks the city with arms outstretched, and the views from the summit encompass the beaches, the bay, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the sprawling city below. A cable car ride to the top of Sugarloaf at sunset, watching the city lights come on as the sky turns pink and orange, is one of the great urban experiences in the world.

Ipanema and Copacabana beaches are more than just sand and water. They are the living room of Rio, where Cariocas (Rio locals) play volleyball, surf, run, and socialize from dawn until late at night. The neighborhoods behind the beaches have excellent restaurants, live music venues, and a nightlife scene that runs on samba, bossa nova, and caipirinhas.

The Amazon is the other pole of the Brazil experience. Manaus, deep in the interior, is the launching point for multi day lodge stays and riverboat expeditions into the rainforest. Guided hikes reveal the staggering biodiversity of the jungle. Canoe trips through flooded forest (igapo) at dawn bring you face to face with pink river dolphins, caimans, howler monkeys, and macaws. Piranha fishing, night walks with a guide spotlighting tarantulas and tree frogs, and meeting indigenous communities add to the immersion.

Iguazu Falls on the border with Argentina is one of the most powerful natural spectacles in the world. The Brazilian side provides the panoramic views, with a walkway extending over the river to the edge of the Devil’s Throat where you are surrounded by cascading water on three sides. The spray, the noise, and the scale are overwhelming in the best sense.

Salvador de Bahia on the northeast coast is the cultural heart of Afro Brazilian heritage. The Pelourinho historic center, with its colorful colonial buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Capoeira, the martial art disguised as a dance, originated here. The food, heavily influenced by West African traditions, is some of the most distinctive in the country.

Where to Stay

Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio is the most famous hotel in South America, a 1920s art deco landmark on Copacabana Beach. Hotel Fasano Rio in Ipanema is the contemporary luxury alternative with a rooftop pool and Philippe Starck design. In the Amazon, Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge and Cristalino Lodge offer luxury eco experiences deep in the rainforest. On Fernando de Noronha, Pousada Maravilha is a small luxury property with some of the most spectacular ocean views in Brazil.

Food and Drink

Brazilian food is hearty, diverse, and built around the churrascaria tradition of all you can eat grilled meats carved tableside. Feijoada, a black bean stew with pork, is the national dish and traditionally served on Saturdays. Acai bowls originated in the Amazon and are served fresh throughout the country. Pao de queijo (cheese bread) is the addictive snack you will eat at every meal. Moqueca, a coconut fish stew from Bahia, is one of the best things you will eat in South America.

The caipirinha, made with cachaca (sugarcane spirit), lime, and sugar, is the national cocktail. It is refreshing, potent, and the perfect accompaniment to a beach sunset.
